Childhood and Early Life
Israeli poet and author, Yair Hurvitz, spent his early years in New York City. He attended the High School of Music & Art, where he developed his talent as a jazz musician.
Military Service and Early Publications
After graduating, Hurvitz served in the US Army in Heilbronn, Germany. During this time, he began writing poetry in English and published his first book of poems, "The Endless Seed," in 1959.
Return to Israel and Literary Journey
In 1959, Hurvitz returned to Israel and settled in Jerusalem. He began writing in Hebrew and translating from Hebrew into English, including Igal Allon's memoir, "The House of My Father." He also taught literary criticism.
Wartime Service and Literary Leadership
Hurvitz served in both the Yom Kippur War and the 1982 Lebanon War. In 1996, he became the head of the publishing house Sifre Bitzaron.
Literary Output and Accolades
Hurvitz's literary output included 13 books of poetry, two novels, and a collection of essays. His work earned him the Jewish Book Council of America Award twice (1969, 1975) and numerous other literary accolades.
