Early Career and Formula 2
Ricardo Zunino began his racing career in 1969 in South American sports car races. He subsequently competed in the Argentine Touring Car Championship before transitioning to Europe in 1977 to participate in the European Formula 2 Championship.
British Formula 1 and Formula 1 Debut
In 1979, Zunino joined the British Formula 1 Championship, winning one race at Brands Hatch and earning three other podium finishes. At the end of the season, he made his Formula 1 debut under extraordinary circumstances. Ники Лауда, then a driver for Brabham, announced his retirement during practice for the 1979 Canadian Grand Prix, and Zunino, initially present as a spectator, stepped in as his replacement. He finished seventh at the Grand Prix and secured a contract with Brabham for 1980.
Formula 1 Tenure and Retirement
Zunino's performance in the first half of 1980 was disappointing, and he was eventually dismissed from the Brabham team. In 1981, he made two further Grand Prix appearances for Tyrrell before ending his racing career and embarking on a tourism business.
