Coaching Career

Rodriguez started coaching at Salem International University in 1987, initially as the defensive coordinator and later becoming the head coach. At the age of 25, he became the youngest head coach in the country. However, the college discontinued its football program after just one year, leading Rodriguez to return to his alma mater.

He then became the head coach at Glenville State College, where he worked for six years. Under his leadership, the team won three state-level championships and even reached the national level once. In 1996, he joined Tulane University as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator, where the team showed promising results.

On November 26, 2000, Rodriguez returned to West Virginia University as the head coach, replacing Don Nehlen. Although the team had a weak first season, Rodriguez turned things around the following year, leading to impressive results. He was named Coach of the Year by Sporting News in 2002 and Best Sports Coach in West Virginia by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.

Later Career

In December 2007, Rodriguez announced that he would be leaving West Virginia University to become the head coach at the University of Michigan. This decision was influenced by a defeat against the Pittsburgh Panthers, which prevented the team from participating in the national championship. Unfortunately, his first season at Michigan was one of the worst in the university's history.

Due to the team's poor performance and hostility from the previous coach, Lloyd Carr, and his players, Rodriguez replaced most of the coaching staff. This decision negatively impacted his popularity and ultimately led to his departure from the team and coaching profession.

Current Role

Currently, Rodriguez works as a sports analyst for CBS Sports. Although he doesn't see many prospects for returning to coaching, he remains open to the opportunity should it arise.
