Early Life and Education
Born in Germany, Bletschacher pursued diverse academic interests, studying philosophy, law, theater studies, and music theory at universities in Munich, Heidelberg, Paris, and Vienna. This expansive education laid the foundation for his multifaceted career in the arts.
Career in Opera
From 1959 to 1996, Bletschacher was actively involved with the Vienna State Opera. He served various roles within the organization, initially as an assistant director, then as a director from 1967, and finally as chief dramaturge from 1982. His responsibilities covered both the dramatic and operatic aspects of the institution.
Additionally, Bletschacher authored the librettos for 12 operas, including Alfred Schnittke's renowned "Gesualdo" (1995). His literary prowess extended beyond opera, as he also wrote the novels "The Exile, or The Journey to Brindisi" (1998) and "The Castle on the Thaya" (2000). Furthermore, he published two volumes of poetry and several children's books.
Literary Contributions
Bletschacher's translation skills were also noteworthy. He produced new German translations of Marivaux's comedy "The Game of Love and Chance" (1968), Shakespeare's sonnets (1996), and Lorenzo da Ponte's librettos for Mozart's operas (1993).
