Richard Briers was an English actor of theater, film, television, and radio. He was widely regarded as one of the most outstanding actors in Britain, with a career spanning approximately 50 years.

Richard Briers

Early Life and Education

Briers was born in Raynes Park, Surrey, to Joseph Benjamin Briers and Morna Phyllis. His mother had aspirations of a show business career and was a talented pianist and a highly skilled teacher of acting and music. Briers left school at the age of 16 without receiving a certificate. He worked as a clerk in a London cable manufacturing company while studying electrical engineering at evening school. At the age of 18, Briers was called up for military service in the Royal Air Force, where he primarily handled paperwork. It was during his time in the military that Briers met actor Brian Murphy, who helped him establish connections in the local polytechnic institute's drama society. Briers even appeared in several productions of this society.

Acting Career

After completing his military service, Briers enrolled in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he studied for two years. Upon graduating with a silver medal, Briers received a scholarship from a theater company in Liverpool. In 1961, Briers made his television debut in the lead male role in the film "Marriage Lines." However, it was his role as Tom Good in the television series "The Good Life" from 1975 to 1978 that brought him true fame and incredible success. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Briers also played leading roles in various television projects.

Despite his enormous success on the small screen, Briers always considered the theater his main field for applying his acting abilities. He had the opportunity to perform in numerous productions of William Shakespeare and George Bernard Shaw. After his successful television work, Briers decided to return to the stage. He started with Shakespeare, and with the help of Kenneth Branagh, he secured roles in "Twelfth Night" and "King Lear." Briers also appeared in film adaptations of Shakespeare's works directed by Branagh, such as "Henry V" in 1989, "Much Ado About Nothing" in 1993, and "Hamlet" in 1996. Interestingly, Briers had his first film role in 1960.

Briers also gained recognition as a voice actor. He was notably known for his work in numerous commercials and voiceovers for children's television productions.

Personal Life and Legacy

In 1989, Briers was appointed to the Order of the British Empire, and in 2003, he became a Commander of the Order. In an interview with "The Daily Mail" in January 2013, Briers revealed that he had smoked approximately half a million cigarettes in his lifetime. He quit smoking in 2003, but the tobacco had already taken its toll, and Briers was diagnosed with emphysema in 2008.
