Early Life and Education
Richard Cordray was born on May 3, 1959, in Columbus, Ohio, and raised in Grove City. As a high school student, he worked at McDonald's and served as class valedictorian. During his undergraduate studies at James Madison College at Michigan State University, Cordray interned for Senator John Glenn. He earned a bachelor's degree in pre-law and political theory in 1981.
Legal Career
Cordray subsequently pursued graduate studies at Oxford University, where he earned a master's degree in economics in 1983. He then graduated from the University of Chicago Law School with a Juris Doctor in 1986. He was editor-in-chief of The University of Chicago Law Review from 1981 to 1983 and later served as a law clerk for Robert Bork and Anthony Kennedy.
Political Experience
In 1990, Cordray was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives. After redistricting, he ran for the House again in 1992 but was unsuccessful. The following year, he was appointed Ohio Solicitor General by the state's attorney general. As Solicitor General, Cordray argued six cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Private Practice and Political Campaigns
After Republicans gained control of Ohio in 1994, Cordray entered private legal practice. He ran for Ohio Attorney General in 1998 and for the U.S. Senate in 2000, but was unsuccessful in both campaigns.
Elected Office
Cordray was elected Franklin County Treasurer in 2002 and re-elected in 2006. In 2008, he was elected Ohio Attorney General, serving until 2011.
Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau
On July 17, 2011, President Obama nominated Cordray to be the first director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). The Senate confirmed his nomination on July 16, 2013, for a five-year term.
Personal Life
Cordray is married to Margaret "Peggy" Cordray, a law professor at the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. They have twin children.
