Richard English: Irish Historian and Political Scientist
Born in Belfast, Ireland, in 1963, Richard English is a prominent historian and political scientist. His academic journey began at Keble College, Oxford, followed by a doctorate in History from Keele University.
Early Career and Rise to Professorship
In 1990, English joined the School of Politics, International Studies, and Philosophy at Queen's University Belfast as a Lecturer. His exceptional scholarship and research led to his promotion to Professor in 1999. He currently holds the position of Professor of Politics at Queen's University, specializing in Irish history and leading the M.A. program in Irish Politics.
Focus on Irish Republicanism
English's research primarily centers on the Irish Republican Movement, particularly the history of the Irish Republican Army (IRA). His doctoral thesis, published as "Radicals and the Republic" in 1994, explored republican politics in the aftermath of the Irish Civil War.
Literary Contributions
English has authored several critically acclaimed books. His biography of IRA veteran Ernie O'Malley, "Ernie O'Malley: IRA Intellectual," appeared in 1998. "Armed Struggle - The History of the IRA," released in 2003, won the Political Studies Association's Political Book of the Year Award and was shortlisted for the Ewart Biggs Memorial Prize. In 2006, he published "Irish Freedom: The History of Nationalism in Ireland," which received the Ewart Biggs Memorial Prize.
Collaborations and Recent Research
In 1999, English co-authored "The State: Historical and Political Dimensions" with Charles Townshend and "Rethinking British Decline" with Michael Kenny. His most recent work, "Responding to Terrorism" (2009), examines terrorism as a military and political issue, earning widespread praise.
