Biography of Heinrich von Sybel
Heinrich von Sybel, a German historian and political figure, was born on December 2, 1817, in Düsseldorf. He was a representative of the nationalist Prussian-Malagasy school, which was a leading direction in the German bourgeois historical science during the second half of the 19th century. Sybel studied at the University of Berlin under the guidance of Leopold von Ranke and Francesco Guicciardini. He later became a professor at the University of Marburg, University of Munich, and University of Bonn.
Sybel was the founder of the historical journal "Historische Zeitschrift" and served as its editor. In 1875, he became the director of the Prussian State Archives in Berlin. Additionally, Sybel was a member of the Hessian and later the Prussian Chamber of Deputies.
As an ideologue of the bourgeoisie, Sybel combined moderate-liberal criticism of feudal remnants and Germany's fragmentation with anti-democratic views and a strong hostility towards the revolutionary movement. Like other liberals, he transitioned from opposing Bismarck to compromising with the Junkers. Sybel actively supported the Prussian-monarchist path of German unification.
Sybel wrote numerous important works throughout his career. His most influential book, "Geschichte der Revolutionszeit" (History of the Revolutionary Period), was based on archival materials and examined the revolution as an event not only in France but also in Europe as a whole.
