Richard Griffiths Biography

Richard Griffiths, an English actor, was born on July 31, 1947, in a small town in northern England, in a family of a steelworker and a weaver. His parents were deaf and mute, so Griffiths had to learn sign language along with his school subjects. He does not like to talk much about his childhood, but it is known that at the age of 15, he was finally able to escape from home after several unsuccessful attempts. At the same time, Griffiths also dropped out of school and started working as a porter at the local market. He became close friends with a market trader who eventually convinced him to return to his studies. Unfortunately, the name of this person is not preserved in history, but it was him who contributed to Griffiths becoming a fairly successful actor, appearing in "Superman," "Naked Gun," and "Harry Potter" among others. However, all of this happened much later. At that time, Richard was just returning to the life of an ordinary student and started attending the drama club at Stockton Secondary School. He was so passionate about the stage that after school, he enrolled in the Manchester School of Theatre.

Career

After graduating from the Manchester School of Theatre, Griffiths secured a position at the BBC radio station while also participating in small plays, sometimes as a director. Gradually, Richard became a leading actor at the Manchester theater, which, in turn, propelled his career in film and TV. His television debut took place in 1976 with a small role in the series "The Flying Squad." This was followed by more significant works such as "Superman 2" (1980), "Gorky Park" (1983), "King Ralph" (1991), "Blame It on the Bellboy" (1992), and many others. Richard Griffiths has over 60 roles in film and TV to his credit. However, his breakthrough role was as Uncle Vernon in the Harry Potter series. He appeared in all four films and also starred in the fifth episode, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," scheduled for release in the summer of 2009. Griffiths has not forgotten about the theater and has performed as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company. By the way, in the theater, he does not hesitate to address the audience. Once during a performance, a woman's mobile phone rang twice from the stalls, and on the third call, the actor interrupted his scripted lines and demanded that the mobile be switched off, and then he even said, "Get out of the hall, madam!" And there were not just one but three such incidents. So, if you happen to attend a play with Richard Griffiths, do not forget to turn off your cell phone.
