Early Life and Career
Richard Harris was born in Limerick, Ireland, on October 1, 1930. His father intended him to join the family business, but Harris developed a passion for rugby at a young age. He made his stage debut at age 17 and honed his acting skills at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
International Fame
Harris's breakthrough film role came in "The Sporting Life" (1963), for which he won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. He gained international recognition for his performances in "The Guns of Navarone" (1961), "Mutiny on the Bounty" (1962), and Michelangelo Antonioni's "Red Desert" (1964).
Hollywood Stardom
Harris became a Hollywood star with his portrayal of King Arthur in the Broadway musical "Camelot" (1960). He starred in numerous films throughout the 1960s and 1970s, including "Major Dundee" (1965), "Robin and Marian" (1976), and "The Wild Geese" (1978).
Recent Roles and Legacy
In his later years, Harris played Emperor Marcus Aurelius in "Gladiator" (2000) and Albus Dumbledore in the "Harry Potter" franchise. He also starred as Cromwell in the 1970 Soviet film of the same name. Harris's iconic performances continue to inspire audiences worldwide. He died of cancer in 2002 at the age of 72.
