Early Life and Acting Beginnings
Richard Lawrence Hatch was born in Santa Monica, California, in 1945. He began his acting career on the stage at the Los Angeles Repertory Theater. In the late 1960s, he appeared in several Off-Broadway productions, winning an Obie Award for his role in "Your Cat is Dead" in Chicago.
Television Stardom
In 1970, Hatch made his television debut as Phil Brent in the soap opera "All My Children." Over the next few years, he secured increasingly significant roles in popular series such as "Cannon," "The Waltons," "The Rookies," and "Barnaby Jones." In 1976, he landed his first leading role as Inspector Dan Robbins in the detective drama "The Streets of San Francisco."
Captain Apollo and the Golden Globe Nomination
Hatch gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Captain Apollo in the science fiction series "Battlestar Galactica" (1978). Although the show was short-lived, Hatch received a Golden Globe nomination for his performance.
Continued Success in the 1980s
Throughout the 1980s, Hatch continued to appear in numerous television shows, including "Hotel," "Murder She Wrote," "The Love Boat," "Fantasy Island," and "Dynasty." He also joined the cast of the popular soap opera "Santa Barbara" in 1990.
Later Career and Legacy
In 1999, Hatch reprised his role as Captain Apollo in the short film "Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming." He also appeared in a remake of "Battlestar Galactica" (2004-2009) as Tom Zarek. In addition to his television roles, Hatch has acted in several feature films, including "Best Friends" (1975) and "Prisoners of the Lost Universe" (1983).
Beyond Acting
Hatch has directed two short films, "The Great War of Magellan" (2005) and "Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming." He has also acted as a writer on these projects. In addition, he conducts acting workshops and makes appearances at conventions, such as the San Diego Comic Con International.
