Richard Hickox: A Maestro of Music
Born into a musical family in Buckinghamshire on March 5, 1948, Richard Sidney Hickox's life was destined to revolve around music. Surrounded by art and music from a young age, his journey began at the Royal Grammar School and continued at the Royal College of Music in London (1959-1966).
Education and Early Career
After studying at Queen's College, Hickox further honed his skills at Cambridge University (1967). In 1971, he founded the City of London Sinfonia, an orchestra he led until his passing. He also established the Richard Hickox Singers & Orchestra in 1972.
Collaborations and Artistic Leadership
Through collaborations with Martin Neary and the London Symphony Chorus (1976), Hickox gained recognition as an exceptional conductor. His tenure as Chief Conductor of the Bradford Festival Chorus (1978) showcased his artistic vision.
Ensemble Foundations and Partnerships
In 1982, Hickox became Artistic Director of the Northern Sinfonia. He co-founded the Collegium Musicum orchestra with Simon Standage in 1990. His final role as Music Director of the London Symphony Orchestra (1985-2008) cemented his legacy as an esteemed conductor.
Legacy and Impact
Hickox's charismatic leadership inspired countless musicians. He directed prestigious events and performed for dignitaries worldwide. Recognized as one of the most talented conductors of his era, he passed away on November 23, 2008, after a heart attack following an orchestra recording session.
