German and Soviet Spy

Birth and Religion

Born in Berlin, Alfred Klatt was born Jewish but converted to Catholicism.

Early Life and Occupation

Klatt lived in Berlin until 1932 before relocating to Austria with his lover, Gerda Filiz. From 1928 to 1938, he served as the estate manager for Baron Tavonat.

Emigration and Imprisonment

Fearing persecution as a Jew, Klatt sought refuge in Budapest in 1938. While there, he engaged in the illegal acquisition and sale of visas to Jewish immigrants. In 1939, he was arrested and held for several months on bribery charges but was eventually released.

Collaboration with German Intelligence

Around 1941, Klatt joined the German intelligence service, the Abwehr. Under the direction of Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, he established the "Bureau Klatt" espionage unit.

Suspicion and Arrest

In 1944, the SS detained Klatt on suspicion of collaborating with British intelligence. He was later released.

Post-War Capture

After the war, Klatt was apprehended by American intelligence and interrogated.
