Biography of Richard Van Fam

Richard Van Fam, a 62-year-old survivor, managed to survive in the open ocean for three and a half months. Born in Vietnam, Van Fam later immigrated to the United States, obtaining a green card. In 2002, he lived on his 26-foot boat named 'Sea Breeze' in Long Beach, California. However, his maritime journey did not go as planned when a sudden storm broke the mast of his boat while heading towards Catalina Island in May of the same year.

A Challenging Journey

Richard Van Fam's boat was quite fragile, but it suited the modest Vietnamese immigrant as he saw 'Sea Breeze' as his home rather than a luxury. As the storm persisted, Van Fam began experiencing more serious losses. The outboard motor of the boat malfunctioned, and the transmitter broke. Losing control, the boat drifted into the open ocean. Being a bachelor with no family or relatives in the United States, Van Fam's disappearance went unnoticed.

Thus began Richard's long solo journey, which lasted for about three and a half months. Initially, he sincerely believed that he would be discovered soon and did not panic. However, the lack of water and food became a problem, and Richard had to adapt as best as he could. He believed that he had to take what the sea offered him. Though it was not as much as he desired, it was enough to sustain him. Richard learned to catch fish and seagulls, and on one occasion, he managed to catch a large sea turtle, providing him with enough meat for a long time.

Time passed, weeks turned into months, and Richard remained in a rather gloomy situation, with the boat drifting with the ocean currents. Unable to communicate his predicament, his only hope was to encounter another vessel.

Survival Techniques

Richard Fam built a fire on the deck of his boat, cooking his food over it. He occasionally collected rainwater in buckets for drinking and later managed to produce fresh water using a primitive, yet effective, device. Interestingly, the boat lacked a transmitter, but it did have a small television powered by a solar battery, providing some solace in his solitude.

A Miraculous Rescue

Richard Van Fam's plight caught the attention of a US military plane, which reported its sighting to the base. The Americans suspected he might be a drug smuggler. When the vessel 'McClusky' approached him, Richard was overjoyed, while the American sailors viewed him with suspicion. He was found 480 km away from Costa Rica on September 17th, indicating that he had spent more than three and a half months at sea. Despite losing 20 kg of weight and a tooth, he was otherwise in good health.

After sharing his story with the sailors, Richard was able to convince them of its authenticity, and they even pooled money together to provide him with a ticket back to the United States.

Despite skepticism from some individuals who found it strange not to encounter any ships in the busy waters between Long Beach and Catalina Island for three months, Richard insisted that he had not seen any vessels.
