Early Life and Education

Karl Stumpf was born in 1848 in Wiesentheid, Germany. As an Austrian musicologist, he earned his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Freiburg in 1887. Subsequently, he worked in London before returning to Vienna.

Double Doctorate and Professorship

In 1896, Stumpf completed his second doctoral dissertation, this time in psychology, at the University of Vienna. He sought guidance from the renowned physicist and philosopher Ernst Mach during his research. From 1908 onwards, he held a professorship at the same university.

Publications and Critical Work

Stumpf authored several books, including "Aesthetics of Music" and "Psychology and Pathology of Representation." He also contributed to music criticism in the newspaper "Die Zeit."

"Primitive Music": A Groundbreaking Study

Stumpf's most influential work remains his 1893 book, "Primitive Music." In this comprehensive examination, he explored the origins and development of music among indigenous cultures. This pioneering study established him as a founding father of the Vienna School of Comparative Musicology.
