Emma Drew: From Unemployed Graduate to £100k Blogger
Early Life and EducationEmma Drew, a 30-year-old finance blogger from Ely, Cambridgeshire, struggled to find employment in her field after graduating from Chester University. Despite applying to "hundreds" of jobs, she was offered only an entry-level website administrator role at a biotechnology company that had no relevance to her studies in youth work.
Embracing Blogging
Feeling disillusioned by her university experience, Emma started a blog in December 2010. She began sharing her experiences with "flogging stuff" on eBay, completing surveys, and working as a mystery shopper.
Financial Success
In December 2015, Emma realized that her blog was earning her over £25,000 a year. By that time, she and her husband, Tony, had decided to quit their day jobs and focus on blogging full-time. While it was initially daunting to give up their regular incomes, Emma found that the most challenging time was when she was working full-time and trying to build her blog on the side.
Last year, their blog generated £106,000, allowing them to hire their first employee and invest around £20,000 in expenses. Emma is the face of the blog, writing most of the content and creating videos, while Tony handles editing and manages finances.
Mental Health and Lifestyle Benefits
For Emma, the best aspect of her job is the flexibility it offers, which supports her mental health. Suffering from depression and anxiety, she can work from anywhere on her worst days, allowing her to prioritize her well-being.
Blogging also allows Emma to spend more quality time with her loved ones. She now sees her father, who is in his 70s, more frequently due to her flexible schedule.
Ethics and Business Management
As a successful blogger, Emma is selective about the companies she collaborates with. After initially receiving a £20 offer for a sponsored post, she realized she could charge more for her services as her credibility increased.
Despite her strong principles, Emma has faced negative comments as a plus-size woman on YouTube. However, she has learned to accept that pleasing everyone is impossible and that coping with criticism is an essential aspect of blogging.
Plans for the Future
Emma is ambitious for the future and aims to see if a "normal" person, rather than a YouTube sensation like Zoella, can earn over £1 million. This year, she and Tony are planning their first major purchase: a new home.
Tips for Aspiring Bloggers
Emma shares three key tips for aspiring bloggers:- Don't wait for perfection, start now and improve as you go.
- Be unique and authentic, finding a niche that makes you stand out.
- Don't work for free. Even as a beginner, you deserve to be compensated for your efforts.
