Biography of Richard Blundell

Richard Blundell is a British economist and econometrician who has achieved numerous accolades and prestigious awards throughout his career. He was knighted for his contributions to the field, one of the highest honors that a scientist can receive from the government.

Blundell obtained a Bachelor's degree in Economics and Statistics from the University of Bristol in 1973. He then went on to complete a Master's degree in Econometrics and Mathematical Economics from the London School of Economics in 1975.

From 1975 to 1984, Blundell lectured on econometrics at the University of Manchester. In 1984, he was appointed as a professor of economics at the University College London, and two years later, he became the director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies. In 1991, Blundell founded the ESRC Centre for the Microeconomic Analysis of Public Policy at the Institute.

Blundell has also served as a visiting professor at various educational institutions. He taught economics at the University of British Columbia in 1980, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1993, and at the University of California, Berkeley in 2000.

In 1991, Blundell became a member of the Econometric Society. He received the Yrjö Jahnsson Award from the European Economic Association in 1995 for his research on microeconometrics, labor resource analysis, and the reform of social security systems and consumer behavior.

Blundell was elected as a member of the British Academy in 1996. He served as an editor of Econometrica from 1997 to 2001 and was previously an editor of the Journal of Econometrics from 1992 to 1997.

In 2000, Blundell was awarded the Frisch Medal, which recognizes the most interesting empirical or theoretical-applied research published in Econometrica over the past five years.

Blundell was honored with a honorary title of the American Economic Association in 2001 and became a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2002. He was also elected as a fellow of the Institute of Actuaries in 2003.

In 2004, Blundell became the president of the European Economic Association. He received the Jean-Jacques Laffont Prize from the Toulouse School of Economics in 2008 for his contributions as an internationally renowned economist who combines theoretical aspects of economics with applied techniques.

In 2010, Blundell was awarded the CESifo Distinguished Fellow Award for his significant contributions to resolving and understanding current issues in economic policy. In the same year, he became the president of the Econometric Society, the Society of Labor Economics, and the Royal Economic Society.

Blundell was honored with the Institute for Labor Economics Prize in 2012. Currently, he holds the position of Professor of Political Economy at University College London and serves as the Research Director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies.

Blundell has received numerous honorary doctorates, including from the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland in 2003, the University of Mannheim in 2011, and the Norwegian School of Economics in 2011.

In 2014, Blundell was knighted for his contributions to the field of economics and social sciences.
