Ricky Gray: An American Killer
Ricky Javon Gray, commonly known as Ricky Gray, was an American murderer who committed a series of brutal crimes alongside his nephew, Ray Joseph Dandridge. Gray's crimes gained widespread attention due to their cruelty and senselessness, as well as the notoriety of one of their victims, Bryan Harvey.
The Murder of Treva Terrell Gray
On November 5, 2005, the body of 35-year-old Treva Terrell Gray was discovered in a shallow grave on Brooksides Avenue in Washington, Pennsylvania. Treva was the wife of Ricky Gray, a 28-year-old former inmate, and they lived together with their nephew, Dandridge, who had recently been released from prison. Treva's parents, John and Marna Squires, claimed that she and Ricky had a tumultuous relationship. After the discovery of Treva's body, marks on her forearm indicated that she had scratched Ricky in a struggle. Although both Ricky and Dandridge were questioned by the Washington police, they were not considered suspects at the time.
A Series of Murders
In the weeks following Treva's murder, a series of heinous crimes plagued Virginia. On December 18, 2005, Sheryl Warner, a 37-year-old court secretary and mother of three, was found shot and hanged in her burning house in Reva, Culpeper County. On January 1, 2006, Ryan Carey was brutally attacked by Gray and Dandridge outside her parents' home in Arlington, leaving her severely injured and permanently disabled. The most notorious crime occurred on January 1, 2006, when members of the Harvey family were found tied up, beaten, and stabbed in the basement of their burning house in Richmond. Kathleen Harvey, 39, Brian Harvey, 49, and their daughters, Stella, 9, and Ruby, 4, all perished in the attack.
The Arrest and Confessions
The police received a tip on January 6, 2006, linking Gray and Dandridge to the Harvey murders. They subsequently arrested the two men in Philadelphia. Within hours of the arrest, Dandridge confessed to the murders of Percyell and Mary Tucker, as well as Ashley Baskerville. Gray, in a conversation with a detective, confessed to his involvement in the Harvey family murders, providing detailed information about the use of a hammer and kitchen knife during the killings. He also admitted to killing his wife, Treva, with Dandridge's assistance. Ashley Baskerville was revealed to have participated in the Harvey family murders, the robbery in Chesterfield, and the home invasion at her residence.
The Trials and Sentencing
Gray was tried in Virginia, while Dandridge faced trial in Pennsylvania. On September 19, 2006, Dandridge pleaded guilty to three counts of murder in order to avoid the death penalty and receive a sentence of life imprisonment with the possibility of parole. Gray, however, was sentenced to death on May 12, 2011, with an execution date set for June 16, 2011.
