Rina Frenkel: A Trailblazing Israeli Politician
Rina Frenkel is a renowned Israeli public figure who served as a Member of Knesset (MK) for the Yesh Atid party during the 19th Knesset, holding the 15th spot on the party's list. Prior to her entry into politics, Frenkel held the position of Deputy Director of the Northern District Employment Service.
Early Life and Education
Born in 1956 in Smolensk, Soviet Union, to parents Maria and Abram Frenkel, Frenkel earned an M.A. in Musicology from the Sobinov Academy of Music in Saratov, Russia. From 1980 to 1989, she served as the director of a music school in Kiev, Ukrainian SSR.
Professional Career
In 1990, Frenkel immigrated to Israel with her family. From 1991 to 2003, she worked in the employment service in Nahariya, providing counseling and job placement services to scientists while collaborating with government agencies and the National Insurance Institute (NII) on various projects.
Between 2003 and 2006, Frenkel managed the employment office in Ma'alot-Tarshiha and participated in the "City Promotes Employment" project with the Ministry of Industry, the Joint Distribution Committee, and local authorities. During her tenure, she initiated numerous projects within the city, including job fairs and the development and implementation of retraining courses. Partnering with the Western Galilee College and employers, she organized entrepreneurship courses. Her efforts led to a significant decline in the city's unemployment rate, from 13.9% to 7.2%, earning the Ma'alot-Tarshiha employment office recognition as the top branch in both 2004 and 2006.
From 2006 to 2012, Frenkel served as Deputy Director of the Northern District Employment Service, overseeing 24 offices and collaborating with regional directors. She focused on improving job placement for job seekers within the district, initiating projects to expand and enhance services for applicants, and streamlining the employment process. She also fostered effective working relationships between various organizations, including the Ministry of Industry, NII, Ministry of Welfare, Ministry of Absorption, and the Joint Distribution Committee.
Entry into Politics
In 2013, Frenkel graduated from the Technion's Directors of Industry program. She joined the Yesh Atid party and was elected to the Knesset in January 2013, holding the 15th spot on the party's list.
Legislative Work
Frenkel championed several legislative initiatives during her term as an MK:
- Sick Leave Allowance Bill:Extended sick leave benefits to parents caring for sick children.
- Subsistence Guarantee Bill:Allowed women to earn minimum wage while still being eligible for NII benefits.
- NII Bill:Expanded eligibility for educational grants to children of single mothers up to the 12th grade.

In addition to her legislative work, Frenkel served as a member of the following committees:
