Education and Early Career

Born on 11 June 1971, Liz Kendall attended Queens' College, University of Cambridge, graduating in 1993 with a first-class degree in history. She joined the Labour Party in 1992 and worked at the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR).

Government Roles

In 1996, Kendall became an advisor to Harriet Harman, who appointed her as a member of the Royal Foundation for Health in 1998. She also served as director of the Maternity Alliance. In 2001, Kendall unsuccessfully sought the Labour Party's nomination for Chesterfield at the parliamentary election.

She worked as an advisor to Patricia Hewitt, Minister of Trade and Industry, later becoming Hewitt's aid when she was appointed Health Secretary. Kendall played a role in passing the Health Act 2006, which restricted smoking in public places.

Member of Parliament

Elected as Labour's candidate for Leicester West in 2010, Kendall became Shadow Minister for Care and Support in 2011. She was re-elected in 2015 with an increased majority.

Leadership Contest

Following Labour's defeat in the 2015 election, Kendall entered the leadership race to succeed Ed Miliband. She advocated for putting the country's interests before the party, earning her some recognition. However, she finished last among the four candidates, with only 4.5% of the vote.

Shadow Secretary of State for Health

On 9 April 2020, Kendall was appointed Shadow Secretary of State for Health by Keir Starmer. She continues to play a leading role in the Labour Party, advocating for healthcare reform and social justice.
