Early Life and Wrestling Beginnings

Risako Kawai, a Japanese wrestler, was born into a family of athletes. Her father competed in Greco-Roman wrestling at the 1989 World Championships, while her two sisters also wrestled. From a young age, Risako excelled in the sport, winning several national youth competitions.

University and Early Career

In 2013, Kawai enrolled at university. The following year, she helped Japan clinch the Wrestling World Cup. In 2015, she placed second at the World Championships in the 63 kg weight division, earning her a spot at the 2016 Olympics.

Olympic Gold and World Domination

At the 2016 Olympics, Kawai defeated Russian wrestler Inna Trazhukova in the semifinals and Belarusian Maria Mamashuk in the final, securing her first Olympic gold medal. She was subsequently awarded the Purple Ribbon Medal of Honor.

In 2017, Kawai moved down to the 60 kg weight category, winning the Asian and World Championships. At the 2019 World Championships, she captured gold in the 57 kg division, securing an Olympic license for Japan.

Tokyo Olympics and Repeat Success

In 2020, Kawai defended her Olympic title in the 57 kg division at the Tokyo Games, becoming the first Japanese female wrestler to win multiple Olympic gold medals. She also became the first Japanese wrestler to win three consecutive World Championships.
