Kaori Icho is a Japanese freestyle wrestler who has achieved unparalleled success in her sport. Born in Hachinohe, Japan, on September 22, 1984, Icho began wrestling at the age of eight, following in the footsteps of her older sister, Chiharu.
Olympic Dominance
Icho has cemented her place in history as the only wrestler, male or female, to win four Olympic gold medals. She achieved this extraordinary feat at the 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016 Games, dominating the 63 kg weight class throughout her career.
World Championships
Icho's Olympic triumphs were matched by her unrivaled success at the World Championships. She captured an astonishing 10 world titles, further solidifying her status as the greatest female wrestler of all time. Since 2014, Icho has competed in the 58 kg weight class.
Early Success and a Rare Defeat
Icho's wrestling journey began with early success. However, in 2007, she suffered a setback at the Asian Championships in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. In the quarterfinals, she lost to Wen Hsu-ju of Chinese Taipei and finished eighth out of nine competitors.
