Moldovan Literary Scholar, Dostoevsky Specialist, and Jewish Activist
Early Life and EducationSvetlana Yakovlevna Shikhova (née Cerbușca) was born into a Jewish family in Moldova. She completed her doctoral studies in literature at the Institute of Literature of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR in 1983, focusing on Dostoevsky's "Through Motifs." In 1999, she earned her doctorate from the Institute of Russian Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Pushkin House), delving into "The Artistic Constants of Dostoevsky in the Context of Historical Poetics."
Academic Career
Shikhova served as head of the Chair of Russian and World Literature at the Ion Creangă State Pedagogical Institute in Chișinău. Subsequently, she became head of the Judaica Department at the Institute for Interethnic Research (later the Center for Ethnology of Jews) of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Moldova. She is currently a professor at the Department of Russian Literature at the National University of Moldova.
Literary Contributions
Shikhova's research has primarily focused on the works of Fyodor Dostoevsky. She is the author of several monographs, including "The Through Motifs of Dostoevsky's Work in the Historical and Cultural Perspective" (1985) and "Dostoevsky: Constants of Poetics" (2001). She also wrote the play "Myshkin and Moses, or the Arrival of the Train" (2007). Additionally, she compiled a collection of selected works by Mikhail Gershenson titled "Essays from the Past" (2003).
Jewish Community Involvement
Shikhova has been an active member of the Jewish community in Moldova. She currently serves as the Chair of the Union of Jewish Organizations of Chișinău (SEVROK). Her dedication to Jewish culture and heritage is reflected in her work on the book "Cultural Heritage of the Jews of Moldova" (2010), co-authored with her daughter.
Family
Shikhova is married to Emanuel Izhikilevich Kleiman, a Moldovan botanist and plant breeder. Their daughter, Irina Emmanuelovna Shikhova, is a Doctor of Philological Sciences and head of the Center for Ethnology of Jews at the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Moldova.
