Early Life and Political Beginnings
Madiera Keita was born in January 1917 in Kati, French Sudan (present-day Mali). After completing his secondary education, he graduated from the William Ponty College in Dakar, Senegal, as a teacher. He served in the French army and later worked as an archivist in Dakar and Conakry.
Founding of the Democratic Party of Guinea
In 1946, Keita co-founded the Progressive Party of Guinea with F. Mamoudou Turé. He was also a founding member and the General Secretary of the Democratic Party of Guinea from 1947 to 1952. He was removed from this position under pressure from the colonial administration.
Career in Mali
After leaving Guinea, Keita continued his political career in French Sudan. He joined the Sudanese Union - African Democratic Rally (US-RDA) and was elected a member of the party's National Politburo. In April 1959, he was appointed Minister of the Interior in the territorial government of French Sudan. He retained this position after the Federation of Mali gained independence on June 20, 1960.
Imprisonment and Return to Mali
During a coup attempt in 1960, Keita was arrested and deported to Bamako. After the Mali Federation dissolved in September 1960, he was appointed Minister of the Interior, National Defense, and Security of the Republic of Mali. He also held other ministerial positions, including Minister of Justice and Chairman of the Committee for Social and Cultural Guidance.
Foreign Relations and Ideological Stance
Keita played a significant role in Mali's foreign relations and attended international conferences. He was a staunch ally of President Modibo Keita and frequently emphasized the importance of Marxist ideology in the country's development.
Later Career and Legacy
Keita was removed from all his positions following a coup in 1968. He was subsequently arrested and died on December 21, 1998. The National Assembly of Mali honored his memory at a special session, recognizing his contributions to the nation.
