Birth and Early Life
RJ Mitte was born in Lafayette, Louisiana. During his birth, complications arose, and doctors were forced to perform an emergency C-section. As a result of oxygen deprivation, the newborn's brain was damaged, leading to cerebral palsy and impaired mobility. Sadly, upon learning of his disabilities, RJ's biological parents abandoned him. Fortunately, he was adopted by Roy Frank Mitte II and his wife, Dina Mitte. However, the couple later divorced, and RJ was raised solely by his mother.
Overcoming Adversity
Determined to raise her son without limitations, Dina Mitte instilled in him the belief that the words "can't" and "won't" were not part of his vocabulary. Through her relentless efforts and the support of doctors who fitted him with leg braces to correct his gait, RJ learned to walk. Initially reliant on crutches, his dedication to physical therapy eventually enabled him to discard them. Today, only an involuntary twitch in one arm betrays his disability to the untrained eye.
Acting Career
Inspired by his sister Lacianne's forays into modeling and acting, RJ began taking acting classes. He initially appeared in small roles in several Disney Channel shows, including "Hannah Montana," but without receiving on-screen credit. Then came the breakthrough: an audition for a new drama series called "Breaking Bad." Seeking an actor to realistically portray a teenager with cerebral palsy, the casting directors were unaware of RJ's past struggles with mobility. He flawlessly demonstrated both the awkward gait and speech impediments characteristic of the condition, securing the role. Ironically, his character in the series suffered from a more severe form of cerebral palsy than he did at the time. RJ had to revisit the past he had tried to leave behind.

Mitte's portrayal of Walter White Jr. in "Breaking Bad" garnered critical acclaim and multiple award nominations. The series became a global phenomenon, breaking boundaries and altering perceptions of disability. RJ hoped that his role would change the way people viewed those with cerebral palsy or other forms of disabilities—perhaps even how they viewed him. Indeed, after the show aired, he received an outpouring of letters from young people with similar challenges, expressing gratitude and sharing their own stories.
