Early Life and Education
Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Nikolai N. Chugai received his education at Tomsk University, graduating in 1955.
Affiliation with the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory
Since 1955, Chugai has been affiliated with the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
Research on Unsteady Stellar Physics and Interstellar Medium
Chugai's major research contributions lie in the realm of unsteady stellar physics and the interstellar medium.
UV Ceti-Type Flare Stars
His extensive work on UV Ceti-type flare stars involved analyzing their brightness, color, and spectral characteristics during both quiescent and flare states. Notably, he obtained the first high-temporal-resolution spectra of stellar flares.
Chromospheric Model of Flares
Chugai developed a detailed chromospheric, or nebular, model of flares. His model established the identity between the physical nature of flares and overall activity on red dwarf stars and the Sun.
Phenomena in Interacting Galaxies
Based on his collaborative research with S. B. Pikelner on the instability of astrophysical plasma leading to the formation of filaments, Chugai proposed a hydrodynamic model for the emergence of "tails" and bridges in interacting galaxy systems.
