Early Career
Robert Calloway began his professional boxing career in July 1996 in the Light Heavyweight division. He initially enjoyed a successful run, winning 23 consecutive fights, although four of those were ruled as no contests for various reasons. By his 7th fight, he had claimed the WAA Light Heavyweight Championship, knocking out American Ray Dominguez (21-7) in the 9th round.
Championship Wins and First Defeat
In 1999, Calloway captured the IBA Americas Cruiserweight Championship, defeating Darrel Spriggs (14-1) by points. However, in November of the same year, he suffered his first loss, a close decision against American Kenny Keen (46-3). Following this defeat, Calloway rebounded with six consecutive knockout victories, including wins over James Tillis and Jason Nicholson. He then lost a points decision in 2001 to Danish boxer Tue Bornegård Thomsen (21-1).
Heavyweight Contention
In 2002, Calloway knocked out Otis Tisdale (20-6-1) to claim the WBF Intercontinental title. Later that year, he fought to a draw against Ruslan Chagaev. In 2003, he suffered his first stoppage loss against Olympic champion Audley Harrison. He also defeated Julius Long (10-2) by points. However, in 2004, Calloway lost in the second round to American Hasim Rahman.
Continued Professionalism
Undeterred by his losses, Calloway continued to fight regularly. In 2005, he knocked out Jim Strohl (27-3) to win the NABC title. In January 2006, he lost a rematch against Ruslan Chagaev by knockout. Despite this setback, Calloway fought on, losing a points decision to Jameel McCline. However, he soon returned to winning ways, knocking out Terry Smith (30-2-1) and Galen Brown (29-4-1) in 2007.
International Challenges and Retirement
In 2008, Calloway faced two undefeated Russian boxers, Alexander Alexeev (15-0) and Grigory Drozd (30-1), losing to both. In December 2009, he lost to Polish boxer Pawel Kolodziej (23-0). His final professional fight was in May 2010, when he was knocked out in the first round by Shannon Briggs. Calloway continued to fight sporadically in Australia, losing to Chunky Wellington (49-5-5) in 2011 and Mark De Mori (17-1-2) in March 2012, before retiring from professional boxing.
