Ivan Calderon - Biography
Ivan Calderon, also known as "Iron Boy," is a Puerto Rican professional boxer who competes in the minimum weight division (47.6 kg). He is a southpaw with a height of 152 cm. Born on January 7, 1975, in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, Calderon currently resides in Las Americas, Bayamon.
Amateur Career
Calderon began his boxing career as an amateur, representing Puerto Rico in international competitions. He also participated in the 2000 Olympic Games held in Sydney.
Professional Career
In 2001, Calderon transitioned to the professional ranks. On May 3, 2003, he won the World Boxing Organization (WBO) championship title in the minimum weight category by defeating Eduardo Marquez. Calderon successfully defended his title 11 times and was recognized as the WBO "Super Champion."
On August 25, 2007, Calderon won the championship title in the lightest weight category against Hugo Cazares. He went on to defend this title against Juan Esquer, Nelson Dieppa, Rodel Mayol, Jesus Iribe, and Cazares. Calderon was also a former champion according to "The Ring" magazine in the lightest weight category.
Personal Life and Charitable Activities
Calderon studied at the Jose Nevárez Landrón School in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico. He was married to Wilma Laguna, and they have two children named Wilvani and Ivan Jr. Despite initial challenges in their relationship, Calderon and Laguna got engaged in 1997 and married in 1999. However, they started divorce proceedings in January 2009.
In addition to his boxing career, Calderon invests his earnings in real estate. He is also involved with a company specializing in satellite tracking for transportation. Calderon collaborates with the Department of Sports and Recreation in Guaynabo and has participated in several charitable events in Puerto Rico, particularly those focused on youth. He has visited schools, funded gifts at the Three Kings festival in Loiza, and received a special award at the WBO annual convention for his charitable work with children from disadvantaged communities.
Legal Controversy
Federal agents conducted a search at Calderon's beachfront home in Humacao, Puerto Rico, and seized over 225 kg of cocaine worth over $4 million. Calderon maintains his innocence and claims he had no knowledge of the drugs.
