Biography of Robert Alan Jarrow
Robert Alan Jarrow is an American mathematician and economist, currently serving as a professor of asset management at the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University since 1979.
Education and Academic Achievements
Jarrow graduated with honors from Duke University in 1974, majoring in mathematics. He then obtained a Master of Business Administration degree from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College in 1976. In 1979, Jarrow completed his Ph.D. in finance at the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) under the guidance of Robert C. Merton.
Contributions to Financial Modeling
Professor Jarrow is recognized as one of the creators of the Heath–Jarrow–Morton framework, a model widely used in the pricing of interest rate derivatives. He is also known for his contributions to reduced-form models of credit risk and other financial forecasting tools. These models and instruments are currently regarded as industry standards and are utilized for pricing and hedging in major investment and commercial banks. Jarrow is considered one of the most respected researchers in the field of credit risk.
Awards and Recognition
Throughout his career, Robert A. Jarrow has received numerous awards and honors, including the CBOE Pomerance Prize, Graham and Dodd Scrolls Award, and the International Association of Financial Engineers (IAFE) Financial Engineer of the Year Award in 1997. He serves as a member of the advisory board of the journal Mathematical Finance, which he co-founded in 1989.
Professional Engagements and Publications
Jarrow is an editor or associate editor for several other professional journals and serves on the board of directors of various companies and professional societies. He currently holds positions at both the IAFE and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). Jarrow served as the Managing Director of Research for Kamakura Corporation since 1995.
Professor Jarrow has authored four books, including "Options Pricing," "Finance Theory," "Modeling Fixed Income Securities and Interest Rate Options," and "Derivative Securities." He has also published over 100 articles in leading financial and economic journals.
