In 1835, he enrolled in the Royal Military Academy and continued his education in Belgium. At the age of twenty, Burke joined the Austrian army and was promoted in 1842. He served for a significant period of time until he fell ill in 1848, which led to his retirement from the military. He returned to Ireland and began working in the Royal Police.

Approximately five years later, Burke decided to emigrate to Australia. Upon his arrival in Melbourne, he immediately found employment as a policeman. In 1860, Burke participated in an exploratory expedition that would prove to be fateful. Alongside eighteen other men, they set out to explore Australia with twenty-seven camels and twenty-three horses. The journey was expected to be perilous, and it indeed turned out to be so.

The expedition faced numerous difficulties, including hunger, cold, and hardships. However, these challenges were only half of their troubles. Many courageous men, including Robert Burke, perished on this treacherous journey. Despite the hardships, the Irish explorer did not give up easily, much like most participants on the expedition. From the very beginning, it became clear that they would face numerous difficulties. They traversed unfamiliar marshy terrains, and their animals succumbed to the arduous and lengthy journey one by one. They ran out of provisions earlier than expected, and the route proved to be exceptionally challenging and different from what they had anticipated. Internal conflicts and animosity within the team also played a significant role, tearing the already divided group apart.

Robert Burke managed to endure for a considerable amount of time, holding onto the hope that a rescue expedition would eventually save him and his companions. Unfortunately, this hope was never realized. Burke succumbed to the cold, never receiving the assistance he desperately needed. Nevertheless, the name of Robert Burke remains in the memory of those interested in the history of the continent and the stories of the most courageous individuals.
