Biography of Robert Burton
Robert Burton was an English writer born on February 8, 1577 in Lindley, Leicestershire. After studying at Sutton Coldfield and Nuneaton schools in Warwickshire, he entered Brasenose College, Oxford University in 1593. In 1599, he was elected as a member of the council of Christ Church College.
Burton obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1602 and his Master's degree in 1605. In 1616, he received a Bachelor of Divinity degree and worked as a tutor and librarian at the college. He lived as a reclusive scholar in Christ Church, dedicating himself to the study of medicine, mathematics, astrology, and geography.
Notable Works
One of Burton's first notable works was the comedy "Philosophaster," written in Latin in 1606 and performed eleven years later at Christ Church. However, his most significant and laborious work was "The Anatomy of Melancholy." The first edition of this extensive and meticulously organized overview of information about melancholy was published in 1621. Burton gathered knowledge about melancholy from various sources, both ancient and contemporary.
Death
Robert Burton passed away on January 25, 1640 in his apartment at Christ Church College. His work "The Anatomy of Melancholy" remains a notable contribution to the understanding of melancholy and its treatment.
