Early Life and Career
Born on April 27, 1931, in New York City, Robert Donner's childhood was spent moving with his family to schools in New Jersey, Michigan, and Texas. After graduating high school, he served four years in the United States Navy at a base in California. California left an impression on Donner, so he decided to stay after his military service.
Settling in Los Angeles, Donner worked various jobs while taking classes at San Fernando Valley College (now California State University, Northridge), studying Art History, Psychology, and Speech. He worked as a messenger, salesman, bartender, advertising artist, gardener, and insurance investigator before his neighbor and close friend, Clint Eastwood, suggested he try acting.
Rise to Fame as a Character Actor
Encouraged by Eastwood, Donner joined an acting studio. His first film role was an uncredited appearance in the 1959 western Rio Bravo, starring John Wayne. He went on to appear in the sequels El Dorado and Rio Lobo, forming the trilogy.
Donner gained popularity as a character actor, often portraying eccentric or comedic characters. This made him a sought-after talent, particularly on television (Bonanza, Columbo, Murder, She Wrote, The Incredible Hulk, The Waltons, Evening Shade, MacGyver, and others), but it kept him from reaching star status.
Personal Life and Legacy
Donner was married to producer and screenwriter Jill Sheridan Donner. When not acting, he was an avid golfer. He was known as one of Hollywood's top golfers, participating in the "Hollywood Hackers" club and playing in celebrity tournaments for various charities. He also enjoyed tennis and participated in amateur tournaments.
Donner passed away on June 8, 2006, due to cardiac arrhythmia. He had completed his last work, the family adventure comedy Hoot, shortly before his death.
