Robert Rubin: A Visionary Leader in Finance and Politics
Early Life and EducationRobert Rubin, born into a Jewish family in New York, relocated to Miami with his family. He graduated from Miami Beach High School, where he was an active member of Boy Scout Troop 35. In 1960, Rubin obtained a degree in Economics from Harvard College, followed by a Juris Doctorate from Yale Law School in 1964. He received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Miami in 2008.
Career at Goldman Sachs
In 1966, Rubin joined the Arbitrage Department of Goldman Sachs. By 1971, he had risen to the position of General Partner. In 1980, he joined the Management Committee alongside future New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine. From 1990 to 1992, Rubin served as Chairman and CEO of Goldman Sachs.
Role in the Clinton Administration
On January 20, 1993, Rubin was appointed Assistant to the President for Economic Policy. He chaired President Clinton's newly created National Economic Council from 1993 to 1995.
Tenure as Secretary of the Treasury
In January 1995, Rubin became the 70th United States Secretary of the Treasury. During this time, Mexico faced a financial crisis that threatened a default on its debt obligations. President Clinton, advised by Rubin and Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, provided the neighboring country with a $20 billion loan.
"Committee to Save the World"
Rubin closely collaborated with Greenspan and economist Lawrence Summers to address crises in the financial markets of Russia, Asia, and Latin America from 1997 to 1998. In 1999, Time magazine recognized the trio as the "Committee to Save the World."
Later Career
Following his tenure as Secretary of the Treasury, Rubin pursued a career in business.
