Early Life and Education

Robert Andreevich Goedicke, a Russian architect of the eclectic period, was born in 1829. After graduating from the German St. Peter's School, he enrolled in the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1846, where Professor A.P. Brullov became his mentor.

Foreign Travel and Recognition

Completing his studies in 1852, Goedicke embarked on a self-funded journey abroad, studying architectural monuments in Germany, England, France, and Italy. Upon his return to St. Petersburg, his drawings and plans earned him the title of Academician in 1856.

Professorship and Architectural Commission Work

In 1864, Goedicke's design for a 2000-spectator theater (now in the Academy's architectural museum) led to his appointment as Professor, and the following year he joined the academy faculty. In 1892, he became Rector of the Academy's architecture department.

Building Collaborations and Contributions

Goedicke collaborated with Professor G.E. Bosse on the construction of palaces in Znamenka (1852-53) and Mikhailovka (1856-59). He served as architect, member, and chairman of various construction committees, including the Technical-Artistic Committee for St. Isaac's Cathedral (1867-present) and the Commission for the Construction of the Vyborg Short-Term Prison (1885-1891).
