Early Life and Naval Career

In 1932, Werner Giese enlisted in the German Navy as a cadet. He was promoted to Ensign in 1933 and to Lieutenant in 1935. He served on the destroyers "Albatross," "Leopard," and "T-107."

Submarine Service

In 1940, Giese transferred to the submarine service. In October 1940, he was appointed commander of the submarine U-98. He conducted six patrols on this vessel, amassing 194 days at sea.

Awards and Recognition

In 1941, Giese was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. In 1942, he took command of the U-177. On his first patrol to the Indian Ocean, he sank 14 ships totaling 87,388 gross register tons (GRT). This earned him the Oak Leaves to the Knight's Cross in 1943.

Leadership and Post-War Service

In 1943, Giese relinquished command of the U-177. In 1944, he was appointed commander of the 25th (Training) Submarine Flotilla. Later that year, he formed the 1st Marine Anti-Tank Regiment.

After the war, Giese was interned but released weeks later. He served on a minesweeper in the Allied-controlled German Navy. With the foundation of the West German Navy, he was incorporated into its ranks. He served as a naval attaché in the United States for four years and retired in 1970 as commander of the "Nordsee" Marine Division.
