Young Star in the Military
Evdokia Nikolaevna Zavalij was born on May 28, 1926, in the Ukrainian village of Novyi Bug. Despite the naval tradition of prohibiting women on warships, Zavalij stood out as a remarkable exception.

Early War Experiences
As the war broke out, Zavalij was determined to serve her country. Despite her young age, she managed to join a cavalry regiment as a medical orderly, disguising her gender as "Evdokim." Zavalij's first combat experience came during the crossing of the Dnieper River, where she rescued a wounded officer.

Joining the Marines
After recovering from an injury, Zavalij joined a paratrooper brigade and assumed the role of reconnaissance commander. Her abilities and courage in battle earned her the nickname "Lieutenant Dusya." She participated in major operations, including the legendary Kerch landings.

"Frau Black Death"
Zavalij's exploits gained her recognition for her fearless nature. She led her platoon into dangerous missions, earning the fear and respect of her opponents. The Germans dubbed her "Frau Black Death" due to her daring attacks.
The Budapest Operation
One of the most challenging operations for Zavalij's platoon was the Budapest siege. They infiltrated the German command headquarters through the city's sewer system, capturing valuable intelligence. Her audacity and determination impressed the captured German general, who gifted her his pistol.
Post-War Life
After the war, Zavalij was offered a military career, but she chose to return home. Despite the physical and emotional scars of war, she found peace and happiness in her civilian life. She married, raised a family, and worked as a manager in a grocery store.
Legacy and Remembrance
Throughout her life, Zavalij shared her war experiences with young people and honored the sacrifices of her comrades. She participated in Victory Day celebrations and left an enduring legacy as a symbol of courage and determination.
