Biography of Robert Jarni
Early Life and CareerRobert Jarni, a Croatian footballer, was born on October 26, 1968, in Cakovec, Yugoslavia. He began his professional football career at the local club 'MTC' (now called 'Cakovec'). In 1985, he caught the attention of the management of 'Hajduk Split' and joined the team in February 1986.
International Career
Jarni played for the Croatian national team in the 1990s and early 2000s, making 81 appearances, a record that was only surpassed by D. Simic in 2006 with his 82nd international appearance. Jarni's shining moment came during the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, where Croatia won the bronze medal. He scored the first goal against Germany in the quarter-finals, contributing significantly to his team's success.
Club Career
In 1991, Jarni moved to Italy to play for 'AS Bari'. After two seasons, he transferred to 'Torino' and then joined their bitter rivals, 'Juventus'. However, he only stayed with Juventus for a season before moving to the Spanish club 'Real Betis' in 1996. Jarni had a successful three-year stint with Real Betis, scoring 19 goals for the club. In 1998, he joined the English club 'Coventry City' for £2.6 million and was immediately sold to 'Real Madrid' for £3.35 million. He played one season with Real Madrid, making 27 appearances in the Premier League and scoring one goal.
Later Career and Retirement
Jarni continued his career with 'Las Palmas', a Spanish club that gained promotion to the Premier League in the 2000-2001 season. In 2001, he signed a contract with Greek club 'Panathinaikos', but struggled to find a place in the team and retired from professional football at the age of 34.
Mini-Football and Post-Retirement
After retiring from professional football, Jarni turned to mini-football, playing for the club 'MNK Split'. He represented the Croatian national team in mini-football at the 2003 World Championship and scored two goals. Jarni also ventured into business, launching his sportswear brand 'Jarni'. He worked as a commentator for Croatian national team away matches and eventually became the manager and then head coach of 'Hajduk Split' in 2007. However, he left the position a week after the end of the 2007-2008 season.
