Robert Jonquet: A Legendary French Footballer and Coach
Early Years and Club CareerRobert Jonquet began his football journey with Robinson and SS Voltaire of Chatenay-Malabry. In 1942, he joined Stade de Reims, initially playing for the youth team. From 1945 onwards, he became an integral part of the first team, establishing himself as a formidable central defender.
International Successes
Jonquet made his debut for the French national team in 1947. Despite his relatively small stature for a center-back, he excelled in the libero position, earning the nickname "Hero of Highbury" for his performance against England in London. He featured in two World Cups and captained France in six matches.
A Winning Era with Reims
With Stade de Reims, Jonquet achieved numerous successes. He won the French Championship in 1949, 1953, and 1955, as well as the Coupe de France in 1950. In 1953, he also triumphed in the Latin Cup. The highlight of his club career came in 1956 when he played in the final of the European Cup, although Reims fell to Real Madrid.
World Cup Heroics
In 1958, Jonquet captained France to a bronze medal in the World Cup. He played a pivotal role in all but one match, leading the team with determination and skill. His performance in the semi-final against Brazil, despite suffering a broken leg, earned him widespread admiration.
Coaching Career
After retiring from playing in 1960, Jonquet turned to coaching. He guided Strasbourg to promotion to Ligue 1 and coached Reims during a successful spell in the top flight. He also worked with Romilly, Racing Epernay, and Chalon-en-Champagne.
Legacy and Honors
In recognition of his contributions to French football, the stadium of Stade de Reims was named after Jonquet in 2008. He passed away two weeks after the stadium's renovation, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest defenders of his era.
