Biography of Robert Kovac

Robert Kovac is a Croatian footballer who has made a name for himself as a defender. Born in Germany, he currently plays for the German club Borussia Dortmund, a team he joined in 2007. Since 1999, he has also been a key player for the Croatian national football team.

Robert Kovac

Early Career

Kovac began his football career in the small club Hertha 03 Zehlendorf in the Berlin district of Zehlendorf. He played for the club until 1995 when he was noticed by scouts from 1. FC Nürnberg, a team that was playing in the regional league at the time (the third division of Germany). In his time with the club, Kovac played 33 matches and scored 1 goal, helping the team secure a place in the second Bundesliga.

Rise to Prominence

Following his successful stint at 1. FC Nürnberg, Kovac was invited to join Bayer Leverkusen, a team in the Bundesliga. This move marked a significant leap in his football career. In his first season, the 22-year-old Kovac was still adapting to the Bundesliga, but by the 1996-1997 season, he became a regular player in the team's starting lineup. He played for Bayer Leverkusen until 2000, with the team's biggest achievement being a second-place finish in the German league in 1999 and 2000.

Move to Bayern Munich

In the summer of 2001, Kovac's impressive performances caught the attention of Bayern Munich's coaches, who didn't hesitate to pay Bayer Leverkusen €8.5 million for his transfer. In his first two seasons at Munich, Kovac formed a formidable defensive partnership with Thomas Linke or Samuel Kuffour. However, in the 2003-2004 season, he gradually lost his place in the starting lineup due to a minor injury and competition from Argentine defender Martin Demichelis. Kovac's playing time further diminished when Brazilian defender Lucio joined Bayern Munich in the summer of 2004. Despite this, Kovac still played a crucial role in helping Bayern Munich secure two German league titles in 2003 and 2005.

Stint with Juventus

After his contract with Bayern Munich expired, Kovac joined Juventus in Turin. However, similar to his last years at Bayern Munich, he struggled to secure a regular spot in the starting lineup. In the Serie A, Kovac only appeared in 18 matches, scoring 1 goal. In the 2005-2006 season, Juventus became the Italian champions but had their title revoked due to a corruption scandal in Italian football. As a result, they were demoted to Serie B. Kovac decided to remain with the club and helped Juventus secure promotion back to Serie A in just one season.

Return to Germany

In the summer of 2007, Robert Kovac returned to Germany as a free agent and joined Borussia Dortmund. Being of German descent, like his older brother Niko, Robert Kovac decided to represent his ancestral homeland in international football. He made his debut for the Croatian national team on April 28, 1999, in a match against Italy (0-0). Since his debut, Kovac has been a regular player for the national team.

Throughout his career, Kovac has represented his clubs and country with distinction, winning various championships and accolades. He was part of the Croatian team in the 2002 World Cup and the 2004 European Championship, where he played integral roles for his national team. Additionally, he won the Intercontinental Cup in 2001 and has been a two-time German league champion and two-time German Cup winner.
