Robert Morgan: A Master of Animated Horror
Early Life and InfluencesBorn in Yateley, Hampshire, England, Robert Morgan first encountered the dark allure of cinema at the tender age of three. A viewing of the classic horror film "Fiend Without a Face" with his uncle left an indelible mark on his psyche. This fascination with the monstrous, the uncanny, and the repulsive manifested itself in his childhood interests in monsters, sharks, and insects.
Education and Early Animation
After completing school, Morgan pursued a degree in animation and design at the Surrey Institute of Art & Design. Despite the advent of modern digital technologies, Morgan preferred the tactile nature of claymation and stop-motion animation. His first work, "Man in lower-left hand corner of Photograph," was a 15-minute claymation short that showcased his unique blend of macabre and surreal imagery. This early masterpiece won numerous international awards, attracting the attention of industry sponsors.
The Cat with Human Hands
Morgan's second film, "Cat with Hands," was commissioned by Channel 4. The story of a "bad" cat who steals human organs to become more human was met with critical acclaim and garnered several prestigious accolades, including the Soho Rushes New Director Award for Morgan himself.
The Separation and Beyond
"The Separation," a short film about the lives of conjoined twins after their separation, won the award for Best Animated Short Film at the Melbourne International Film Festival. Audiences at a screening in Stuttgart reportedly experienced near-nervous breakdowns after viewing the film, a testament to Morgan's ability to evoke visceral and unsettling emotions. His subsequent film, "Monsters," employed live actors for the first time, dividing critics but still garnering acclaim at film festivals.
Current Projects and Personal Life
Morgan's latest short film, "Bobby Yeah," has been in production and documented through his social media account, where he engages with fans and shares behind-the-scenes glimpses. Morgan resides in London with his girlfriend, who supports his artistic endeavors by handling much of the behind-the-scenes work. Known for his enigmatic nature, Morgan rarely grants interviews and often provides enigmatic or misleading answers to questions about his personal life and creative process. His fans continue to speculate about his true birthplace, hobbies, and personal beliefs.
