Early Career at FC Utrecht
Robert Maaskant began his footballing journey at FC Utrecht, making his debut in a 0-0 draw against Haarlem on January 28, 1991. Over the next three seasons, he featured in 23 league matches, scoring 2 goals. In October 1991, he also made a memorable appearance in the UEFA Cup against Real Madrid.
Career Progression through Various Clubs
After leaving Utrecht, Maaskant played for Wageningen, TOP Oss, and Fortuna Sittard. However, his career encountered a significant setback in the 1994/1995 season when he suffered a serious knee injury due to a foul by Jan Oosterhuis of De Graafschap.
Transition to AZ Alkmaar and Loans
In 1997, Maaskant joined AZ Alkmaar and quickly established himself as a prolific scorer, netting 15 goals in 28 matches in his debut season. However, he was loaned out to NAC Breda the following season. Upon his return, he spent another season and a half with AZ before moving to MVV Maastricht.
Retirement and Return to Football
Maaskant retired as a professional player in 2004 with amateur club Ger. However, he returned to competitive football at the amateur level and also pursued a coaching career.
Personal Life
Maaskant is a resident of Bunne, near Maastricht. He has been married twice and has a son, Mike, from his first marriage. From his second marriage, he raises a stepson.
