Biography of Robert Ward Vishny

Robert Ward Vishny is an American economist and professor at the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago. He obtained his Bachelor's degree with distinction from the University of Michigan, where he specialized in economics, mathematics, and philosophy. In 1985, Vishny earned his doctoral degree in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Vishny is widely recognized as one of the most prominent representatives of the behavioral finance school. His research focuses on the study of corporate control markets, the behavior of top executives in large corporations worldwide, privatization and the role of governments in the economy, institutional investor behavior, stock market trends, and the economics of corruption processes. Many of his works, often co-authored with Andrei Shleifer, Rafael LaPorta, and Josef Lakonishok, are considered among the most highly cited in the field of economics worldwide.

Behavioral finance is a popular branch of economic knowledge that analyzes decision-making processes by investors, creditors, and borrowers. It also examines the principles of determining market prices for various goods, which are often loosely connected to their costs and popularity. Vishny has devoted significant attention to studying the factors and reasons that influence decision-making in complex economic situations, integrating elements of economics, mathematics, sociology, and psychology into his research.

Currently, Vishny leads the Corporate Finance program at the National Bureau of Economic Research. In 1994, he co-founded LSV Asset Management with Lakonishok and Shleifer. This project provides a range of valuable management services for institutional investors and utilizes interesting investment models based on the principles of behavioral finance. Vishny continues to actively collaborate with the firm and is formally listed as one of its founders, executives, and agents.
