Early Life and Career
Roberto Boninsegna, an Italian striker, was born on November 13, 1943, in Mantua, Italy. His mother, Elsa, endured Allied bombings during his birth. Despite the challenges, she successfully delivered and raised her child.
Rise to Prominence
Boninsegna began his career with Prato in 1963 after being rejected by Inter Milan's head coach. He later played for Potenza and Varese, where he made his Serie A debut in 1965. Despite a disappointing season with Varese, Boninsegna moved to Cagliari in 1966, where he joined a talented young team coached by Ettore Puricelli.
International Breakthrough and Controversy
In 1967, Boninsegna earned his first cap for Italy. However, he received an 11-match suspension for excessive aggression in a match against his former club Varese, dashing his hopes of competing in the 1968 European Championship.
Success with Cagliari and Inter Milan
At Cagliari, Boninsegna played three seasons, scoring consistently before being sold to Inter Milan in 1969. With Inter, he won the Serie A title in 1971 and became the league's top scorer with 24 goals. He also led the league in scoring the following season with 22 goals.
World Cup Triumph and Accolades
Boninsegna played in the 1970 World Cup in Mexico, forming a formidable attacking partnership with his former Cagliari teammate, Gigi Riva. He scored two crucial goals, one in the semi-final and one in the final. Despite Italy's defeat in the final, Boninsegna's performances earned him recognition as one of the world's top strikers.
Later Career and Coaching
After leaving Inter in 1976, Boninsegna joined Juventus, winning two further Serie A titles and the UEFA Cup in 1979. He ended his playing career with Verona in Serie B.
Following his retirement, Boninsegna became a coach, managing Italy's Serie C team and the club Mantua. He also served as a scout for Inter Milan.
