Roberto Emílio da Cunha: A Legendary Brazilian Footballer
Early Career and DebutRoberto Emílio da Cunha, a renowned Brazilian footballer and former striker, began his professional career with Flamengo on March 12, 1933. He quickly established himself as a regular starter, making 26 appearances in his debut season. Despite Flamengo's modest performance, placing 6th in the Rio de Janeiro championship, Roberto emerged as a promising talent, scoring five goals (4th in the Carioca league).
Challenges and a Move to São Cristóvão
The following year, Roberto remained Flamengo's top scorer, but the club continued to struggle, finishing 6th once again. In 1935, Flamengo broke their winless streak, earning bronze medals, but Roberto played only two matches that season without scoring any goals. Frustrated by his limited playing time, he departed Flamengo in 1936 for São Cristóvão, where he spent the final five years of his career.
International Debut and World Cup Glory
While at São Cristóvão, Roberto made his international debut for Brazil on December 27, 1936, in a match against Peru during the Copa América. He was subsequently selected for the 1938 World Cup in France. In the tournament, Brazil finished third, with Roberto playing in two matches. Notably, he scored the winning goal in Brazil's 2-1 victory over Czechoslovakia.
Later Life and Legacy
Currently at the age of 98, Roberto is one of the few surviving members of the 1938 World Cup. He is remembered as a talented striker who contributed to Brazil's footballing success during a golden era.
