Biography of Roberto Lavagna
Roberto Lavagna was born on March 24, 1942, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, into a modest family. His father, Angel Juan Lavagna, was a working typesetter who owned a small workshop. Lavagna completed his studies in political economy at the University of Buenos Aires in 1967 and continued his education as a graduate student at the University of Brussels in Belgium. It was during his time in Belgium that he met his future wife, Claudine Marshall, whom he married in 1970. They have three children and two grandchildren.
Early Career and Diplomatic Service
After completing his graduate studies, Lavagna entered the civil service. From 2000 to 2002, he served as Argentina's ambassador to international economic organizations in Geneva and the European Union in Brussels. In April 2002, amid the country's economic crisis, he became the Minister of Economy of Argentina.
Contribution and Resignation
Lavagna is credited with successfully steering Argentina out of its worst economic crisis in history. However, disagreements between him and President Nestor Kirchner over the country's future development paths led to his resignation in November 2005. Following his resignation, Lavagna became a vocal critic of the government's interventionist economic policies.
