Biography of Robert Ančāns

Robert Ančāns was an Obersturmführer in the Latvian Volunteer Legion of the SS. He was also a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. Ančāns graduated from the University of Latvia and voluntarily joined the Latvian Army in 1939.

After the occupation of Latvia by German forces, Ančāns became a volunteer in the 16th Zemgale Police Battalion. He served in this capacity from 1941 to 1942 and was wounded for the first time during this period. Ančāns ended the war as an Obersturmführer in the 19th SS Grenadier Division.

In 1955, Ančāns was appointed as the director of the Latvian Veterans Association. He dedicated his post-war years to supporting and advocating for Latvian military veterans. Ančāns played a significant role in the organization and welfare of Latvian soldiers who had been injured during the war.

Throughout his career, Ančāns displayed bravery and leadership, earning him the prestigious Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. His dedication to his country and his fellow soldiers is a testament to his character and service.
