Asexual and Proud

Robin Dibben, a 23-year-old British man, openly identifies as asexual. He has never experienced sexual attraction and has never kissed a woman outside of his mother. Despite being fully capable and healthy, Robin simply finds the idea of intimate contact unappealing. He has not even kissed anyone because he sees no allure in it.

Self-Discovery and Community

Growing up in a small town, Robin felt different from his peers. While they pursued romantic interests, he remained detached, unable to understand his lack of desire. It wasn't until he stumbled across the term "asexuality" in 2014 that everything made sense. Through the Asexual Visibility and Education Network (AVEN), Robin connected with like-minded individuals, including Tom and Steve from Bristol.

Breaking Barriers and Raising Awareness

In July 2014, Robin launched the podcast "Pieces of Ace" with Tom and Steve. This platform allowed him to share his experiences and shed light on asexuality. The podcast has received overwhelming support, providing a voice for other asexuals and dispelling misconceptions. Robin emphasizes that asexuality is not a deficiency but a valid orientation.

Family and Societal Reactions

While Robin's friends have been supportive, his family has expressed concerns about his health. Some people have questioned his sexuality or accused him of being repressed. Robin acknowledges that societal norms often make it difficult for others to comprehend a lack of sexual desire. However, he is determined to educate and normalize asexuality.

Future Aspirations and Identity

Robin does not rule out the possibility of a non-physical relationship in the future. He also aspires to adopt children when he is ready for the responsibility of parenthood. Despite the challenges, he believes that asexuality should not be pathologized or stigmatized. It is simply a part of his identity, and he lives a fulfilling life with a loving family, friends, and a rewarding career.

The Asexual Flag

Just as the rainbow flag represents the LGBTQ+ community, the asexual community has adopted a flag with black, gray, white, and purple stripes. These colors symbolize asexuality, demisexuality, allies, and gray-asexuality. The asexual flag serves as a symbol of pride and recognition for those who identify on the asexual spectrum.
