Early Life and Musical BeginningsRobin Gibb was born in the Isle of Man in the United Kingdom as the twin brother of Maurice Gibb. Shortly after their birth, the family moved to Manchester. In 1958, they emigrated to Brisbane, Australia, where Robin and his brothers, Barry and Maurice, began their musical journey. They gained local notoriety before returning to the UK.
Bee Gees Success and Solo Career
The Bee Gees soared to success in the late 1960s. However, Robin's desire for a solo venture led to the release of an unsuccessful album, prompting his return to the group 18 months later. The band continued with varying commercial success until the death of Maurice in 2003. Barry and Robin disbanded the Bee Gees, but announced its revival in 2009.
Health and Final Years
Robin Gibb experienced multiple health issues in his later years. He underwent surgery for a bowel obstruction in 2010, and was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2011. Despite treatment, he fell into a coma due to pneumonia in 2012. After regaining consciousness, his doctor revealed the cancer's progression. Robin Gibb passed away in London on May 20, 2012.
Personal Life
Marriages and FamilyRobin Gibb married Molly Hullis in 1968, and they had two children, Spencer and Melissa. The couple divorced in 1980. He married Dwina Murphy Gibb, a playwright and poet, in 1983. They welcomed a son, Robin-John, and a daughter, Snow Evelyn Robin Juliet Gibb, born in 2008.
Character and Legacy
Robin Gibb was known for his vegetarianism and abstinence from alcohol. He supported the Labour Party and was a close friend of Tony Blair. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and was awarded the Ivor Novello and Grammy Awards. He was also appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
