Early Life and Career
José Casagrande Veludo was born in Brazil and worked as a stevedore in Rio de Janeiro's port during his youth. After work, he would play football on the beaches near the port. His skills were noticed by Brazilian referee Armando Marques, who recommended him to the club Fluminense.
Fluminense
Veludo joined Fluminense but was unable to secure the starting goalkeeper position, which was firmly held by the legendary Castilho. However, when Veludo played, he demonstrated a high level of skill, and the fans of "Flu" grew fond of the young goalkeeper.
International Recognition
In 1954, Veludo made his debut for the Brazilian national team, becoming the first time in Brazilian football history that two goalkeepers from the same club (Castilho and Veludo) played for the national squad. He was selected for the 1954 FIFA World Cup but did not play any matches.
Further Career and Decline
Veludo later moved to Uruguay's Nacional and returned to Fluminense, where his performance declined. In a derby match against Flamengo in December 1956, he conceded six goals, some of which were attributed to his errors.
Post-Career Struggles
After leaving Fluminense, Veludo played for several clubs, including Canto do Rio, Santos, Atlético Mineiro, Madureira, and Renascença, but he did not stay long at any of them. Like many former Brazilian football stars, Veludo was forgotten after his playing days ended.
Death
In 1973, Veludo was hospitalized due to health issues. He passed away at the age of 48, a frail man with white hair and weighing only 48 kilograms. The hospital president was a close friend of Castilho, who had also passed away years earlier.
