Roger Allsopp - The Guinness World Record Holder

Roger Allsopp, the Guinness World Record holder for being the oldest person to swim across the English Channel, also known as La Manche, accomplished this remarkable feat at the age of 70. Before Roger, no one had ever swum this famous strait at such an advanced age. This Londoner, originally from London, was 65 years old when he first swam across La Manche. A former oncology surgeon, Roger first conceived the idea of undertaking such a daring and dangerous swim while sitting in a bar. He was inspired by another individual, George Brunstad, who was 70 years and 3 days old when he achieved his record. Motivated by this, Roger, who was already a proficient swimmer, began training for the task. However, he had never swum such long distances before.

Achieving the Record

Despite the challenges, 65-year-old Allsopp successfully covered a distance of approximately 64 kilometers across the turbulent waters of La Manche. He dedicated this swim to charitable causes, raising funds for cancer research centers and the needs of cancer patients. Initially, Roger swore that he would never attempt such madness again after the grueling swim. However, as time passed, the memory of George Brunstad's record, achieved at the age of 70, persisted. When Roger himself turned 70, he decided to pursue breaking this record. Waiting for favorable weather conditions, Roger approached the shores of the strait wearing a whimsical pink swimming cap.

The second swim proved to be even more challenging. Although there were no particularly large waves, it was high tide, and the strong currents typical of La Manche posed significant obstacles. At times, it seemed as if Roger would never reach the shore. Nevertheless, his hands and feet continued to propel him forward, and he covered mile after mile of water. Eventually, the coveted shore came into view. Roger was accompanied by a support team on a boat, who provided encouragement and announced the route. When the lights of the shore appeared in the distance, Roger was already depleted of energy. He vaguely remembers stepping onto the shore, not yet fully comprehending that he had indeed set a new world record. Similar to his previous swim, Roger dedicated this achievement to charitable causes, raising funds for cancer research.

A Message of Perseverance

George Brunstad, at the age of 70 and 4 months, completed the challenging English Channel swim in 17 hours and 51 minutes. He lost 6 kilograms during the swim, but this was insignificant compared to the representatives from the Guinness World Records who greeted him on the shore and officially recognized his record. Although Roger once again vowed to never attempt such extreme feats, he continues to love swimming and the sea. Almost every day, he spends an hour swimming to maintain his fitness. It is quite possible that at the age of 75, Roger will embark on another record-breaking adventure. Meanwhile, his achievement serves as an inspiration for other daring retirees who are preparing and training for their own extreme swims in the cold and unwelcoming waters of La Manche.

A Doctor's Advice

As a physician, Roger knows and reminds others that regular physical activity is essential for everyone. He firmly believes that with age, one should not spare themselves, but instead engage in constant physical activity to defy nature and the aging process.
